What does it take to move to the Netherlands?
The process of moving from the UK to the Netherlands has changed since Brexit, but with the right preparation, your relocation can be smooth and straightforward. As a UK citizen, you’ll need to consider your visa and residence permit requirements before you travel to the Netherlands. If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you will generally need a long-stay visa (MVV) and a residence permit. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) is the main authority handling these applications. Depending on your purpose – whether to work in the Netherlands, join family, or study – there are different types of permits. It’s essential to apply for the right one before you arrive in the Netherlands.
Once you’ve secured your visa, you need to register with the municipality (gemeente) where you will live. This registration is crucial, as it enters you into the Dutch Personal Records Database (BRP) and provides you with a Citizen Service Number (BSN), which is necessary for nearly every aspect of Dutch life, from opening a bank account to accessing healthcare in the Netherlands. You’ll also need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and sometimes proof of employment or enrollment if you’re moving to the Netherlands for work or study. Don’t forget to arrange health insurance, as it is mandatory for everyone living in the Netherlands.
For those moving from outside the Netherlands, the Dutch government recommends making an appointment with the municipality within 5 days of arrival in the Netherlands. If you’re bringing family, each member will need to follow the same process. The embassy or consulate in the UK can provide further guidance on the specific documents you’ll need, and the IND website offers up-to-date information on requirements and the process of moving.
