Planning to relocate to the Netherlands/Holland

Where canals, creativity, and community welcome you home

Thinking of moving to the Netherlands? This guide helps UK movers navigate visas, work, family logistics, and settling in – so you can swap long commutes for canal-side cycling and vibrant, innovation-meets-tradition city life.

What does it take to move to the Netherlands?

The process of moving from the UK to the Netherlands has changed since Brexit, but with the right preparation, your relocation can be smooth and straightforward. As a UK citizen, you’ll need to consider your visa and residence permit requirements before you travel to the Netherlands. If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you will generally need a long-stay visa (MVV) and a residence permit. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) is the main authority handling these applications. Depending on your purpose – whether to work in the Netherlands, join family, or study – there are different types of permits. It’s essential to apply for the right one before you arrive in the Netherlands.

Once you’ve secured your visa, you need to register with the municipality (gemeente) where you will live. This registration is crucial, as it enters you into the Dutch Personal Records Database (BRP) and provides you with a Citizen Service Number (BSN), which is necessary for nearly every aspect of Dutch life, from opening a bank account to accessing healthcare in the Netherlands. You’ll also need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and sometimes proof of employment or enrollment if you’re moving to the Netherlands for work or study. Don’t forget to arrange health insurance, as it is mandatory for everyone living in the Netherlands.

For those moving from outside the Netherlands, the Dutch government recommends making an appointment with the municipality within 5 days of arrival in the Netherlands. If you’re bringing family, each member will need to follow the same process. The embassy or consulate in the UK can provide further guidance on the specific documents you’ll need, and the IND website offers up-to-date information on requirements and the process of moving.

What is the cost of living in the Netherlands?

The cost of living in the Netherlands varies by city and lifestyle, but it is generally similar to many parts of the UK. Housing is often the largest expense, with rents higher in major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, especially in central areas. Smaller towns are generally more affordable.

Groceries and everyday shopping are comparable to the UK, with fresh produce, bread, and dairy widely available. Eating out is common, though restaurant prices in tourist areas can be higher. Public transport is efficient and well-connected, and cycling is a popular, low-cost option.

Health insurance is mandatory for all residents, and the cost depends on the coverage chosen. Utilities and internet add to household expenses. International schools can be expensive, while Dutch public schools are free but may have waiting lists.

What is life like in the Netherlands?

Life in the Netherlands is known for its high quality, strong sense of community, and balance between work and leisure. Dutch culture values directness, openness, and equality. People in the Netherlands are generally friendly and speak excellent English, making it easier for expats to settle in the Netherlands and build new networks.

The Dutch are famous for their love of cycling, and you’ll find dedicated bike lanes and parking everywhere. Work in the Netherlands often means a healthy work-life balance, with flexible hours and generous holiday allowances. Many international companies have offices in cities like Amsterdam and The Hague, attracting a large expat community. If you’re moving from the UK, you’ll appreciate the multicultural environment and the many English-speaking services available.

The healthcare system is modern and efficient, but you need to arrange your own health insurance as soon as you register with the municipality. Dutch schools are highly regarded, and there are many international schools in the Netherlands catering to expat families.

From lively street markets to world-class museums and festivals, there’s always something happening. The Dutch government encourages integration, and you’ll find support services for expats in most cities. Settling in the Netherlands means embracing a culture that values sustainability, innovation, and social connection.
